AN ARTICLE EXCERPT FROM FINE ART CONNOISSEUR
“Devin Michael Roberts (b.1984) is best known for his
ethereal scenes of landscapes, sunsets, moonlight -- that evoke the spiritual
and emotive power of nature. He was born in Oregon, but the family soon moved
to California, and by the time he was 8 they settled in Washington state. This
winter, after nearly 14 years away from Washington, he has settled in a town
called Sequim on the Strait of Juan de Fuca in order to be nearer his family.
“Roberts's approach to painting has been deeply informed by
his museum encounters with the paintings of the tonalist George Inness
(1825-1894) who asserted that the purpose of art is "not to instruct, not
to edify, but to awaken an emotion." His other influences range from James
McNeill Whistler, Jamie Wyeth, abstract artists like Hans Hoffman and Gerhardt
Richter all the way to a whole host of living and dead Russian masters like
Isaac Levitan. He notes, perceptively that "Americans and Russians share a
romantic streak" and he particularly admires the textures, colors and
simplicity in works by Nicolai Fechin and Contemporaries Vladimir Kirillov and
Denys Gordonichy.
“As he sets up his new studio in Washington state this
season, Roberts is finishing a group of very large epic landscapes and he is
looking forward to exploring the fresh subject matter all around him, such as
Washington's waterfront and shipyards. He is also excited about experimenting
with different genres and subjects including portraiture, so that he can keep
growing as an artist." -- Fine
