Meet Suzanne Powers

Suzanne has had a passion for art from a very early age. She has a great love of nature and an eternal curiosity.  Together these qualities make landscape painting a perfect fit for her. Whether painting plein air or in her studio, painting is always a process of exploration and discovery.

Serious study began at the University of Washington, Seattle, where she graduated with a degree in Fine Art. Early and formative influences have come from many artists and styles including the landscapes of John Singer Sargent, exploration of color by artist Sergei Bongart and the Russian Impressionist movement, and watercolors by Edward Seago and Trevor Chamberlain. With early work consisting of representational watercolors, Suzanne now looks for a more impressionistic approach in both oil and watercolor painting.

Since 1977 Suzanne has been a resident of western Washington, spending most of her time between her home on Fidalgo Island and the wide open spaces of the Methow Valley in North Central Washington.

Memberships include the American Impressionists Society, National Watercolor Society, Puget Sound Group of Northwest Artists, Signature Member of the Northwest Watercolor Society, Plein Air Washington Artists, and the Salish Sea Plein Air Painters of La Conner.

Light is what attracts me to a subject, it’s always the light. But, the mood and feeling of a space are what keep me there. Expressing my personal response to that light, color, and form is what my paintings are all about. Nature is my inspiration, its power and fragility. My work is a combination of studio and plein air work, one informs the other. Painting on-site allows me to be spontaneous and responsive to the environment, and to follow a painting wherever it takes me. Studio work allows me to explore technique and creativity. My paintings are a celebration on the natural beauty that surrounds us.
