MOIRAI
The Three
Fates
The Fates
were divine beings, revered in Greek Mythology and said to be daughters of Zeus
and Ananke. The Moirai controlled the existence of humans from inception to
their final passing.
CLOTHO, the
Spinner
The youngest
of the sisters would spin the thread to be woven into the cloth of a soul while
still in the womb. The name Clotho became our utilitarian term ‘cloth’. Each
thread represented the soil’s life and Clotho took care to allow for a
fulfilled existence. Being generous but cautious of her sisters. The Greek
letter ALPHA is usually associated with Clotho as ‘beginning’.
LACHESIS,
the Alotter
The middle
sister’s role was to measure the threads spun by Clotho and to allot the portion of mortal life to each
soul. Within the thread lay the fate of the soul and her decisions determined
how many trials to be faced during a lifetime.
ATROPOS, one
who cannot be turned
Atropos’s
task was to cut the thread, to determine the end of life and she resembles the
death of that individual. She is said to
be ‘unturnable, harsh and a part of the underworld. At her determination, she would send the soul
to Elysium, the Fields of Punishment, or to the Fields of Asphodel, the field
of flowers. The Greek letter OMEGA is
associated with Atropos as an ‘end’.
